Dear All of Us,

Remember Flip Wilson?

If you do, we both

just dated ourselves.

With a twinkle wrinkle,

Flip would tease,

"The devil made me do it."

Well, the devil didn't have

any such luck with Jesus.

Which isn't to say

the devil didn't try.

Like you and me,

Jesus was tempted

    not to be who

    he really is,

    not to do what

    was his to do.

Temptation postures as good

and then spring the trap door

that drops us in some sort of hell,

a not at all "good" pay out!

Every temptation

is a faux-fake out

focused on one or more

goods twisted bad

Jesus got the works -

all three.

In Matthew's construct of

the devil's attempt

to deconstruct the

person and mission of Jesus

it's symbolized by

    The Bread            Pleasure

    The Leap              Power

    The Kingdoms       Possessions

              Matthew 4:1-11

Matthew's version,

factual or fanciful,

validates Jesus being

faithful to

his true self

and mission.

It also situates Jesus

right beside us

in the mighty and

often messy mix

that is our human condition,

temptations included.

Jesus called the devil's bluff,

told the devil to go to hell and

went on to establish the

"Kin Domain Of Heaven"

and invite us in.

       LENT LOOK

What "feel goods"

that aren't really good

         at all

make things bad for

us, neighbor, world?

What forms of

our misplaced control

mess us, neighbor, world?

What status and stuff

have choke holds on us

and by us on

neighbor and world?

What possessions possess?

What follows is hard and difficult.

I am convinced it is necessary.

I pray it leads to hope.

I offer it to you humbly and in love.

           John Frank

Dear All of Us,

Awake or asleep

we are living a nightmare.

Life is dreadfully dangerous.

Existence right now

teeters on the edge of hell.

As is and as is going

are rushing us to a

social/global graveyard.

Wipeout is in the wind.

And worst of all,

most of us don't know it,

or don't want to know it,

or don't know

what to do about it.

Yet, nobody nowhere

gets a pass.

Ever since we bit our butt

biting that apple in the garden

we've had hell to pay.

Now it's even more terrible.

The ante is up

beyond dangerous.

Our dread danger is like

none other is all of history:

     or both in a new

       that blasts

     all to nothing

    but elements of

what could have been

  divinely delightful.

We are organized crazy bad,

in public, in private,

in head, in heart.

The systems that operate us

are sick and sicken unto death.

They set us up for fall.

They curate chaotic

of truth and wisdom

which turn us toward

certainly possible

      and now

sadly close to inevitable

    Causes and Effects

What's setting us up for down?

- capitalistic gouging by the few,

  grinding the many into poverty,

  seducing the rest with

  assorted stuff and status,

  degrading our habitat.

- war whores making

  killers out of kids,

  fattening to obscene obesity

  the military-industrial complex,

  scooping out the common purse

  of enough (853 Billion Dollar

  Defense Budget in the USA

  alone for2022 ), enough

  to eradicate much to most

  of the word's poverty,

  hunger, and illness

- a world-wide

     communication assembly

 internet, social media, cellular,

       print and broadcast

          often used to

      flagrantly misinform,

  mass confusion and conflict

  paired with mind numbing,

  conscience dulling trivia and folly.

- politicians, bureaucrats, dictators

  fashioning cults to support their

  dominating madness and warring.

- an epidemic of excessive "me-ism'

- religion that

  lost its virginity long ago,

  e.g. Christian Nationalism,

  which has nothing to do

  with Christianity or

 "One nation under God,

with liberty and justice for all,"

  e.g. vapid, sterile,

  bureaucratic, corporate,

  denominations and churches

  that dull to denial the

  lived experience of the

  "Kin Domain of God"

  Jesus offers, lived,

  and detailed in the

  Sermon on the Mount.

- AI: great potential, great peril -

  like riding an unbroken,

  unbridled stallion

  at the edge of the

  Grand Canyon

- earth and climate

  on hospice care

- a public confused,

  distracted to death

  with bread and circus

(check tonight's TV listings)

- sheep without a shepherd

  straying precipice close.

Not one word of the above

         is hyperbole,

nor does it have to be

          the world's

      last gasping word

         see nothing,

         do nothing

         and it's the

The extinction

of dinosaurs

eons ago was small change

compared to the bankruptcy

of people and planet

about to cash us out.

So what the heaven

do we do about this hell

on earth?

I know of no one, nowhere

with an organizational

        Master Plan

for reversal and redirection

that can move us righted.

Organizational shuffle

is not where we need to start.

Blessedly we do have

a wondrous,

hope filled

way to start.

It's cellular and small.

It grows a presence

personal, public, and robust.

Individually and in small groups

          we pray for

clarity and courage of heart.

Individually and in small groups

we daringly dream

the real and right,

so such that

we be it,

we live it.

Individually and

in small groups

we can start

to swap out

hell for heaven

as we

   alive a life

We dream

   God's Originating Dream.

After a lover's orgasm

of creative sharing

God viewed

what was conceived:

     "God saw everything

      that had been made,

      and indeed,

      it was very good."

         Genesis 1:31

We live God's

creative dream.

We see everyone

and all that is

as very good

 - God Darn Good -

plenty for all

and for all to share.

We are great-full

We live the dream real.

No more dreams, though,

 of trying to corner

and thus throwing

all off balance.

We refuse to dream

of playing God,

of biting into the

original fruit of

and arrogance

and thus

biting ourselves

in the but again and still.

We quickly, completely

    shake snake free,

    awake from that

    and never ever

    fall for it again.

      Genesis 3

   God's Dream

         of a

  New Creation

 a reset, a redoing,

     a refreshing

in our just now and here:

"For I am about to create

new heavens and a new earth:

the former things shall not be

remembered or come to mind.

But be glad and rejoice forever

in what I am creating;

for I am about to create

Jerusalem as a joy

and its people as a delight.

I will rejoice in Jerusalem

and delight in my people;

no more shall the sound

of weeping be heard in it,

or the cry of distress...

Before they call I will answer,

while they are yet speaking

I will hear.

The wolf and the lamb

shall feed together,

the lion shall eat straw

like the ox;

but the serpent -

its food shall be dust!

They shall not hurt or destroy

on all my holy mountain."

Isaiah 65:17-19, 24- 25

Now there's something

to dream about,

a dream to lean into,

a dream to live into,

one that enlivens and renews.

How can the dream be resident

where we live?

How can the imagery here

be spoken in a living dream,

daytime realized

in our just now right here?

the dream Jesus has.

He spoke it, he lived it,

       he offers it.

"The Kin Domain of God"

Jesus shares how

the dream comes true:

Sermon on the Mount.

     Mathew 5 -7

We dare dream it alive in

attitude, practice, lifestyle.

We peal The Beatitudes off the

Sunday School Flannel Board

and let them place us in

new postures and practices.

The Sermon On The Mount

wraps real and right

about everything:

about our call to be

salt of the earth,

light of the world,

about tradition, anger,

adultery, divorce,

our word of honor,

retaliation, love of enemies,

alms giving, prayer, fasting,

treasure and valuation,

seeing clear and clean,

the choice of God over stuff,

worry and anxiety,

taking a pass on judging others,

messing up the pure and holy,

just asking to receive,

the gold standard

for treating others,

using God's GPS

to go it pinpoint right,

never mind talk -

taste to trueness,

we can't fake out God -

claim doesn't do it,

follow in fact,

don't talk it, walk it.

We calibrate lifestyle to Gospel -

With Jesus we dream alive

a whole new, simplified

manner and approach to

God Dream Lived.

  "In a word,

   what I'm saying is,

   Grow up.

   You're kingdom subjects.

   Now live like it.

   Live out your God-created identity.

   Live generously and graciously

   toward others, the way

   God lives toward you."

        Matthew 5:47-48

       The Message

That means things like

us having enough

and then sharing the rest -

the kids and grandkids,

the needy near and far,

support for justice efforts,

food banks, racial restfulness,

homing the homeless,

being a Big Brother/Sister,

liberal support of

The Christian Brothers

and their educational ministry,

The American Indian

College Fund,

Berea College,

which is tuition free

for the rural and other needful.

Rather than live like

the upper crust,

we keep it simple and share

with those at

the bottom of the pile,

close by and far afield.

We pray/pay Turkey/Syria relief.

      Dare To Dream

ourselves into full torque

acceptance, participation,

     in Jesus' offer of

      life together in

     The Reign of God

With others we are graced

to live real and right,

right in the midst of a world

unreal, wrong and wronging.

God brings light to a dark world

radiating through

our Kingdom living.

  "You are the light

    of the world."

   Matthew 5:14

We are incorporated into

   The Body of Christ

  1 Corinthians 12:27

As a body we live Jesus,

"...the way, the truth

     and the life."

     John 14:6

Practically and as one we live

    his way of life

    the truth that he embodies

the life of God he shares.

We do it in the actuality of our

right now right here.

We are "ecclesia",

"The Gathered"

And gather a lot

we do and that

in small, relational,

Spirit Breathed Community.

We eat together.

We pray together.

We care for each other

and together we care for

people and place in need -

close in, far out.

We do our best to let God

transform our thinking,

values, lifestyle.

We are patient with each other

as that happens.

This is the way the church started

and can restart now.

It is cellular and small.

It grows a presence

public and robust.

We get to live a beautiful

         Love Life

in the midst of its opposite.

As we do we pray, really pray,

that Empire will fade as

   "Thy kingdom come

      on earth as it is

        in heaven."

      Matthew 6:10

As we do we witness to it

   together, practically,

      living the dream

       confident that

     "All shall be well,

      all shall be well...

      For there is a

      Force of love

      moving through

      the universe

      that holds us fast and

      will never let us go."

         Julian of Norwich

Full heartedly and together we

Dear All of Us,

Some of us are

pretty subtle about it.

Some of us are

blatantly obvious about it.

All of us are full time at it.

All of us seek

      The Good Life

Our pursuits take us in

decidedly different directions.

We fixate on everything

from wealth, health,

status, station,

safety and security,

salvation, significance,

popularity, possessions,

peacefulness, comfort,

sensuality, amusement,

wisdom, leisure,

sports binging, and endlessly on.

So, what way, if any, works?

 The Harvard Study of

 Adult Development

was launched in 1938

to find the answer.

A large group of

well off Harvard students

and a large group of

low-income, minimally educated

young men from Boston

were studied over their lifetimes.

Others from both categories

have been added

to this ongoing study

over the past eighty-five years.

In his new book,

     The Good Life: Lessons from

     the World's Longest Scientific Study

psychiatrist, Robert Waldinger, MD,

a lead member of the Harvard study,

updates it and its findings.

Grinding poverty

and debilitating illness

frustrate and prevent

a life of balance and well being.

It's not at all

     The Good Life

Position, power, privilege,

possessions, pleasure

completely fail to provide it.

This in the face of enormous

cultural persuasion and pressure

to the contrary.

The hands down, heads up,

hearts open, consistent finding

              is that

         The Good Life

a life of balance and well being,

comes exclusively, fully, only

   from healthy, consistent

They are of all sorts,

types and depths -

friendships, romance,,

partnerships, families,

co-workers, tennis partners,

church small groups,

book clubs,

close in to casual.

Being single, married, partnered

is not requisite nor determinative.

Such do not cause happiness.

They can be

the setting for happiness

dependent on the clarity,

healthiness and realness

of the relationships

in those settings.

How about that?

What does it say to us

and what do we say to it?

    The essence of

    The Good Life

The Harvard study

was preceded

centuries before

with exactly

the same findings.

are the basis and substance of

   One of the religion scholars

   came up. Hearing the

   lively exchanges of

   question and answer

   and seeing how sharp

  Jesus was in his answers,

  he put in his question:

 "Which is the most important

  of all the commandments?"

  Jesus said,

  "The first in importance is,

  'Listen Israel:

  The Lord your God is one;

  so love the Lord God

  with all your passion

  and prayer and intelligence

  and energy.'

  And here is the second:

  'Love others as well as

  you love yourself.

  There is no other

  that ranks with these."

    Mark 12: 28-31

    The Message

Dear Ones, there is a

serious danger here.

If familiarity doesn't

necessarily breed contempt,

it surely, sadly does too often

breed deep disengagement

and dismissal.

Let's be exquisitely honest

about what Jesus shares here

and our response.

We've heard this many, many times.

But then, have we head?

What has been the timber

of our actual, lived response?

Is our primary and overriding

passion loving God?

That means all day, every day,

always and in everything,

mixing it up with God

in God's Good Creation.

Just how passionate are we

as God lovers?

 of our prayer,

of our intelligence,

of our energy

go into loving God?

No "sort of,"

no "sometimes,"

will energize into

  The Oneness

    with God

  Jesus offers.

       All in

is the only way to

      ALL IN

We are invited

to passionate

with God.

There's nothing

"Ho Hummy"

that qualifies,

indeed intensifies,

as does red hot passion.

Passionate love

enfolds us into

an all inclusive

God Goodness.

It is the Good that is

base and fullness of

 The GOOD Life

It is so inclusive

it means God Love

unites us,

in love of

other and self.

Do we really love

     all other

all creatures

great and small,

all the elements

united in our dinner,

all the vistas

of creation manifest

in The Rockies,

in art and invention,

in The Beloved Community,

in airplanes,

in farms?

Do we love God

vigorously living as

in the diversity of

God Good Creation?

Just how grateful are we

for ourselves?

What kind of relationship

do we have with our true self

our God Centered self?

Are we just plain,

flat out, exuberantly

in love with

who we are?

    God is.

Do we join there?

When we are

in the embrace

of God, other, self,

a no holes barred,

a for real,

a wholesome

it will show up

in nods and smiles

on the street

all the way to a life style

of simply having enough

so others will simply have

enough as well,

and lots of God Good

        This life of

   balance and well being

      doesn't take out

the hards and hurts of life.

     It does give us

     a firm footing

  to wrestle with them.

When we get past

religion and spirituality

as hobbies,

as comfort stations,

as fire insurance for hereafter,

we get swept up in the

     Trinity of One

right relationships with

Dear All of Us,

I see it and say it

  every week

as we connect

     here at

frankly speaking:

 "Dear All of Us."

     Lots of us

from lots of lands.

     All of us

definitely different

dearly the same.

It's one of those

"Stange but true"

phenomenon in life.

We can't "Go figure."

There's nowhere to go,

much less a way

to figure it out.

It's a paradox:

a contradiction

that really isn't.

It's a twin reality to

the saying that

"The more things

are different

the more they are

the same."

For sure that puzzles

our heads, our hearts,

our lives, our world.

  How thrive living

     the paradox

       that all is

Differently The Same?

     All that "is"

    springs from

 the same source

splendidly different.

Every "is" is a flow of

  ex -" IS " - tence.

     All that is

Same Source Sprung

   is at once both

   its' unique self

and at the same time

    an instance,

      of the

    All is One

uniquely, differently.

  With and within

all that is there is a

Holy Communion.

    Every "is

  a moment,

  a motion

  a manifestation

  of what "is"

as different as it may be -

gamma rays, babies, spaghetti,

websites, rainforests, puppies,

Yellow Tail's Big Bold Red wine

     FYI: inexpensive, robust,

     all together worthy -

     I speak from

     personal preference -

     hey, after all, this is

    "spirit uality for the street"-

     thought we could use

    a little let up here!

Well, O.K. and now back to

      Source Same Differently

Scientists recognize

the oneness of all

in its differences,

starting with

one mighty

 Big Bang

 of energy

that bursts forth in

in countless

energies and forms

through what we call

time and space,

and still spins so.

The mystics see it so.

    They sense

   an underlying

       in all

As we see and sense

       that all is

 Differently The Same

we are freed to delight in,

to lovingly embrace

and be embraced by

  all sorts of unique

  cuisines and cultures,

  places and persuasions,

  religions and rituals,

  schooling and socializing,

  music and art,

  bio diversities,

  to name a few

   of all that

      " IS "

 is not a threat.

   Us Unique.

Yes, there is sadly

The Problem of Evil,

We don't know

the whole story.

We do know that

Love is the Energy Field

   ex "IS " tence

 and of its nature

     Love is free,

   free for acceptance,

   free for rejection,

   free for pure creative unity,

   free to be perverted destructive.

          The only response

             to negative

is to hold to the good

             (as in God)

is to flood evil with good.

       See Jesus on Calvery.

       See MLK.

       See First Responders.

       See Foster Parents.

       See Fire Personnel.

       See Media Truth Tellers.

       See a Principled Politician.

       See Prophetic Pastors.

       See Adults In Parent Care.

       See Many Social Justice Groups.

       See Creation Care Givers.

For our part

we are in LOVE,

we wouldn't dream

of harming our

   Source Same

differently expressed.

To do so would be

to harm ourselves

and that which we love.

That's the key to peace.

     Peace is the

tranquility of order.

It's the harmony

of the spheres,

social to celestial.

That's the ground

and energy for

Beloved Community.

That blends all energies

cooperatively creative.

Love is in free flow.

That Love, that Energy,

that Flow, that Mystery,

that Source,

that Goodness

we call

  "God is love."

   1 John 4:8

  We can fathom

   the paradox of

Differently the Same

   only a smidgen.

We can be it, live it

As the Buddhists share it,

How wonderful that

you get to be you,

that Other gets to be unique,

that we get to be Us!

How divine to be

infinitely more than just

next-door neighbors.
